For recovery coaches and peer specialists in Texas

Recovery coaches, get found. Free.

Peer support works, and almost no directory has a place for it. Find Care lists certified recovery coaches and peer specialists next to the counselors and programs people are already searching for, with free online booking and no fee per client, ever.

  • Free to list, for good
  • No NPI needed
  • Free online booking

Who can list

Recovery coaches and peer specialists with a Texas peer specialist certification. Texas certifies peer specialists through certification entities that HHSC approves, with one of two endorsements: Recovery Support Peer Specialist, for substance use, or Mental Health Peer Specialist. The six-month initial certification counts.

Your listing shows you as a recovery coach or peer specialist, with your certification and the date we checked it (how listings work). Coaching with a different credential? Put it in your claim and we'll tell you whether we can list it.

What your listing does

Found where people look

Once a city has enough of them, recovery coaches get their own page there, like "recovery coaches in Houston", next to the counselors and programs in the same searches.

Book a first call online

Someone just out of treatment, or a worried parent, can book a time with you on the spot. You get a text and an email for every booking.

Your rates, clearly

Show what a session or a month of coaching costs, and whether you offer a sliding scale, so the people who reach out already know.

Your website, done

Your profile is a page of your own, at a short link you pick (gocimahealth.com/yourname), with a printable flyer and QR code. No web designer, no hosting bill.

Free paperwork tools

Make a Good Faith Estimate for a self-pay client in a few minutes, free, with nothing to sign up for.

Free, with no catch

A basic listing costs nothing, for good. We never charge per referral, booking or client.

No website? Your profile is one.

Most coaches starting out don't have a website, and don't need to pay for one. Your Find Care profile is a page of your own, with your photo, your story, your rates and a button to book, and it comes with a printable flyer. Here's how to put it to work:

  1. Claim your profile. It takes about five minutes, and an NPI isn't needed.
  2. Make it your address. You get a short link, like gocimahealth.com/yourname, that you pick when you claim. Put it on a free Google Business Profile (the listing that shows on Google Maps), in your Instagram and Facebook bios, in your email signature and on your business cards.
  3. Print your flyer. Every profile has a one-page flyer with a QR code to your page and tear-off tabs with your phone number. Leave it where people who need you will see it: counselors' and doctors' offices, treatment programs' alumni boards, churches, libraries and community centers. Ask first, and keep 12-step meetings free of advertising, as most groups ask.
  4. Send it to the people who refer. Counselors, programs, sober living homes and case managers can text your link to someone who needs a coach, and that person can book a call with you from it.

Can recovery coaches bill Texas Medicaid?

Yes, through an employer. Since January 1, 2019, Texas Medicaid has paid for peer specialist services (billed as H0038) for adults 21 and older with a mental health or substance use condition, when peer support is part of their recovery plan. But a peer specialist doesn't enroll and bill Medicaid on their own:

  • You work for a Medicaid-enrolled provider. That includes behavioral health practices and clinics, chemical dependency treatment facilities, local mental health and behavioral health authorities, federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics, and, since March 2021, opioid treatment programs. A provider that isn't enrolled can contract with one that is.
  • You're supervised. Your supervisor is a qualified credentialed counselor (an LCDC, for example), a licensed practitioner of the healing arts, or another qualified professional overseen by one, and holds a peer specialist supervisor certification. Supervision is at least weekly during your initial certification and at least monthly after that.
  • You can start during your internship. A newly certified peer specialist can give billable services during the 250-hour supervised internship at their job, finished within six months.
  • There's a limit. Medicaid pays for 104 units (15 minutes each) of peer support in a rolling six months, and more when medical necessity is documented.

So the Medicaid route is a job or a contract with a program. Coaching in your own private practice is paid by your clients or their families. If you run a program and want to add peer services, Cima Consulting can get the program enrolled and credentialed with the Medicaid plans (see Texas Medicaid credentialing).

Other ways coaches get paid

  • Private clients. Charge by the session or by the month, and post the price on your listing. If you're certified under Texas law, the No Surprises Act's Good Faith Estimate rule may apply to your self-pay clients. Giving one costs nothing, and our free tool makes it in a few minutes.
  • Programs and organizations. Treatment programs, recovery community organizations, clinics and health systems hire peer specialists, and grant-funded programs pay for peer support too.

Never take money for referrals

Recovery coaches get asked to "send people" to programs, sometimes for cash, free rent or a "marketing fee". Don't. Paying or taking money for patient referrals is illegal under the Texas Patient Solicitation Act. When the referral is to a treatment program, recovery home or lab, it can also be a federal crime under the Eliminating Kickbacks in Recovery Act (EKRA), whoever pays for the care. Pay for the coaching you actually do, by the hour or as a salary, is how it should work. Pay that goes up with how many people you send somewhere is the line you don't cross. Find Care is never paid per referral either.

Questions

Do I need an NPI to list?

No. If you have one, enter it and we fill in your profile for you. A peer specialist can get one free from CMS's NPPES website under the provider type "Peer Specialist" (an individual, Type 1 NPI), and some employers and Medicaid plans ask for it.

Can I list Texas Medicaid as insurance I take?

Only if clients can actually use it with you, which means you see them through a Medicaid-enrolled provider that bills for your services. Otherwise, list your self-pay rate.

Is recovery coaching therapy?

No, and your listing shouldn't say it is. Describe the support you give, like recovery planning, connecting people to meetings, treatment, housing and work, and checking in after treatment. Coaching works well alongside counseling, and many coaches work with a client's counselor.

Is the listing really free?

Yes, for good, with free online booking. We make money from labeled Featured spots and from Cima EHR, our practice software. Both are optional.

How fast does my listing go up?

Usually within two business days. We check your certification, set up your listing and booking from what you send, and send it to you to approve before it goes live.
