- Methadone is listed by 58 programs in 37 Texas cities; buprenorphine by 151 programs in 79 cities (medication lists come from FindTreatment.gov; 41 more organizations registered as methadone clinics in the NPI registry have no such list).
- 213 programs (42% of the 505 with a FindTreatment.gov record) list a sliding-scale fee based on income.
- 188 programs (37% of those with a FindTreatment.gov record) list services in Spanish, in 92 cities.

Every number on this page is counted from the listings on Cima Find Care as of October 27, 2026, and recounted each time the directory's data is refreshed. "Program" means one organization in one city. See how we counted for what the records can and can't tell you.
Levels of care, and how many list Medicaid
Outpatient treatment is the level of care most Texas programs list (487), followed by residential treatment (250), medication for addiction (MAT) (236), intensive outpatient (IOP) (221), detox (181) and partial hospitalization (PHP) (140). The share that list Medicaid runs from 55% to 72%, depending on the level. What each level means: IOP vs PHP and alcohol detox in Texas.

Payment is what each program's record names: FindTreatment.gov's payment fields, and insurance plans named on the program's own website. A program that takes Medicaid but doesn't say so on either isn't counted as taking it. Medicaid here means Texas Medicaid or a named Medicaid product; a Medicaid health plan's name alone isn't counted, because the same companies sell marketplace plans.
Where programs are
Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth have 326 of the state's 945 listed programs. Outside the biggest cities the levels of care thin out fast: detox is listed in 86 cities, residential treatment in 125 and PHP in 68, against 181 for outpatient treatment.
189 of the 441 cities and towns in the directory have an addiction counselor, psychologist, physician, recovery coach or sober living home listed but no treatment program. Texas has many more towns than that; a town with no listing of any kind isn't in these counts at all. Every city's listings are on the Texas directory.
Methadone and buprenorphine
Methadone treatment for opioid use disorder is given at opioid treatment programs certified by SAMHSA (42 CFR Part 8). 58 Texas programs list methadone on FindTreatment.gov, every one of them a certified opioid treatment program on the same record, in 37 cities: Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, El Paso, Arlington, Lubbock, Amarillo, Plano, Longview, Spring, Beaumont, Cedar Park, Midland, Corpus Christi, Laredo, San Angelo, Waco, Weatherford, Brownsville, Denton, Lewisville, Lufkin, Pharr, Temple, Abilene, College Station, Garland, Irving, Victoria, Grand Prairie, Odessa, Tomball, Jacksonville, New Braunfels and Haltom City. Another 41 organizations are registered in the NPI registry as a methadone clinic without a FindTreatment.gov record that lists methadone; they aren't in the methadone counts.
151 programs list buprenorphine (with or without naloxone, or as an injection or implant), in 79 cities, and 126 list naltrexone, in 77 cities. These counts are low for buprenorphine in particular: since December 29, 2022 any practitioner with a DEA registration that includes Schedule III can prescribe it for opioid use disorder (SAMHSA, the MAT Act), so many doctors' and nurse practitioners' offices prescribe it without being a listed program. Medication lists come only from FindTreatment.gov records, which 505 of the 945 programs have.

How we counted
- Where the listings come from. Treatment programs come from SAMHSA's FindTreatment.gov (facilities that list substance use treatment) and from CMS's NPI registry (organizations whose taxonomy code is a substance use rehabilitation facility, a substance use or methadone clinic). An NPI organization that matches a FindTreatment.gov program by phone, or by street and ZIP, is listed once. Names that are plainly a consultancy, biller, insurer, staffing firm or pharmacy are left out. The other counts in the city file come from the NPI registry's addiction taxonomy codes and Oxford House's list of houses. More in how listings work.
- What a "program" is. One per organization in a city, the way the directory's city pages count them: an organization's locations in one city are one program, and the same organization in two cities is two. There are 945 programs at 1,003 locations. A program offers a level of care, a medication or a language when any of its locations does.
- Cities. The city in each record's address. Enclaves count on their own: a Bellaire program is in Bellaire's row, though Houston's city page also shows it.
- Levels of care come from the FindTreatment.gov record and, for programs with a working website, from what that website says (we read it and follow its robots.txt). 440 programs, mostly NPI-only records with no website, have no level of care on record, so they count toward the total but not toward any level.
- Medications, languages and sliding-scale fees come only from FindTreatment.gov records (505 of the 945 programs), so those shares are of programs with such a record.
- Self-reported, not checked by phone. FindTreatment.gov is what facilities report to SAMHSA, and websites say what their owners write. Cima hasn't called these programs to confirm their services, openings, fees or insurance, and a record can lag behind a program's contracts. Listing isn't licensure: Texas licenses chemical dependency treatment facilities through HHSC.
- Not in these counts: programs that have claimed their listing on Cima Find Care (they move to their own profile; none has so far), programs a provider asked us to remove, hospitals and practices not registered as one of the program types above, and individual prescribers.
- No rates per resident. This edition gives counts only. City populations differ a great deal, so a bigger count doesn't mean better access per person.
- Updates. The directory's public records are refreshed monthly, and this page and its files are recounted with each refresh. The date at the top is the data's date.
Questions
How many addiction treatment programs are in Texas?
Cima Find Care lists 945 addiction treatment programs in Texas as of October 27, 2026, counting one per organization in each city, at 1,003 locations in 252 cities. That's programs on FindTreatment.gov plus organizations registered in the NPI registry as substance use facilities, each listed once.
Which Texas cities have the most addiction treatment programs?
Houston (145), San Antonio (54), Dallas (49), Austin (46), Fort Worth (32) and El Paso (21). Those six have 37% of the state's listed programs.
How many Texas detox programs take Medicaid?
115 of the 181 programs that list detox (64%) also list Medicaid. For residential treatment it's 180 of 250, and for IOP 136 of 221. Ask the program whether it takes your Medicaid health plan; how to apply for Texas Medicaid covers getting coverage.
Where can I get methadone in Texas?
At an opioid treatment program. 58 Texas programs list methadone, in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, El Paso, Arlington, Lubbock, Amarillo, Plano, Longview, Spring, Beaumont, Cedar Park, Midland, Corpus Christi, Laredo, San Angelo, Waco, Weatherford, Brownsville, Denton, Lewisville, Lufkin, Pharr, Temple, Abilene, College Station, Garland, Irving, Victoria, Grand Prairie, Odessa, Tomball, Jacksonville, New Braunfels and Haltom City. Each city's programs are on its page in the Texas directory.
How many Texas treatment programs offer services in Spanish?
188 programs list services in Spanish on FindTreatment.gov, in 92 cities: 37% of the 505 programs with a FindTreatment.gov record. The directory's Spanish pages show them first.
Why don't these numbers match FindTreatment.gov?
Three reasons: we add organizations from the NPI registry that aren't on FindTreatment.gov, we list a place once when it's in both, and we count one program per organization in each city rather than each location (945 programs at 1,003 locations).
Can I use these numbers?
Yes. Quote them with a link to this page as the source and the data date (October 27, 2026), and download the counts as CSV above. For a question about the data, write to [email protected].
Does a program being listed mean it's licensed or good?
No. A listing means the program is in a public record; it isn't a rating or a license check. Check a facility's Texas license with HHSC, and see how listings work.
