What partial hospitalization (PHP) is
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) gives at least 20 hours of treatment a week, often 4 or more hours a day, 5 days a week, and you sleep at home. That's the line for ASAM's Level 2.5 and for Medicare's PHP benefit. PHP fits when you need a lot of support but have a safe, sober place to sleep. It's often the step down from detox or residential care, or a way to avoid a residential stay.
A day mixes group therapy, individual counseling and visits with a doctor or nurse, and you go home in the evening.
Not sure which level fits? Find your fit asks four questions, and IOP vs PHP vs outpatient care compares them. A program will also assess you and recommend a level of care.
Questions about PHP in St. Louis
Which partial hospitalization programs (PHP) in St. Louis take Medicaid (MO HealthNet)?
8 list Medicaid on their records: Burrell Inc, St Louis Metro Treatment Center, Assisted Recovery Centers of America, Betty Jean Kerr Peoples Health Centers, Birch Tree Recovery and 3 more. Call the program, then the member services number on your Medicaid card: if your card names a health plan, the program has to be in that plan's network.
What insurance do they take?
9 accept private insurance, 7 Medicare and 4 TRICARE. The plans named most on their own websites: Aetna (4), Cigna (4), UnitedHealthcare (4) and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri (3). A program that doesn't name your plan may still take it: call the number on your insurance card and ask whether the program is in network for PHP, whether you need prior authorization, and what you'll pay.
How much does PHP cost in St. Louis?
Cima Find Care doesn't list prices: what you pay depends on your insurance, the program and how long you need care. Of these 9 programs, 8 take cash or self-pay, 5 have a sliding-scale fee set by income and 6 list state or federal funding for substance use treatment, which can pay for people without insurance. Before you start, ask the program to check your benefits and to put the daily or weekly price in writing.
How long does PHP last?
Often a few weeks, then a step down to IOP or outpatient care as you get steadier. Insurance usually approves PHP a few days at a time and reviews how you're doing.
What should I bring?
A photo ID, your insurance or Medicaid card, a list of your medicines and doses, and your doctors' names and numbers. The first visit is mostly an assessment and paperwork, so it can take longer than a regular session.
What if I need help right now?
In an emergency, call 911. In a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988, any time. SAMHSA's National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free, confidential and open all day, every day, and can refer you to treatment.
