About Suboxone and buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is an FDA-approved medicine for opioid use disorder. It's a partial opioid agonist: it eases withdrawal and cravings, with a ceiling on its opioid effect. Suboxone is buprenorphine with naloxone, a film that dissolves under the tongue; the naloxone is there to discourage injecting it. Buprenorphine also comes as tablets and as a long-acting injection. Since the MAT Act of 2023, any clinician whose DEA registration covers Schedule III drugs can prescribe it for opioid use disorder where state law allows, so it isn't limited to clinics.

How do I check whether my insurance covers a program?

Call the number on your insurance card and ask whether the program is in network for substance use treatment, whether you need prior authorization, and what you'll pay a day. Then confirm with the program's admissions team.

How current is this list?

It's built from SAMHSA's FindTreatment.gov, the federal NPI registry and the programs' own websites, as of 2026-10-27. Cima has not called these programs to confirm openings, fees or insurance. Programs can claim their listing to correct it.

What if I need help right now?

In an emergency, call 911. In a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988, any time. SAMHSA's National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free, confidential and open all day, every day, and can refer you to treatment.
