Programs with the fullest public record come first. Levels of care and insurance are as listed on FindTreatment.gov or the program's own website. Filter them by insurance, language and telehealth.
What intensive outpatient (IOP) is
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) gives adults at least 9 hours of treatment a week, for example 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, while you live at home and keep some of your routine. ASAM's intensive outpatient level is 9 to 19 hours a week. IOP fits when you can live at home and keep work, school or family going but need more than a weekly session. It's also the usual step down after residential care or PHP.
Most of the hours are group counseling, with individual and family sessions along the way. Some programs run evening groups for people who work, so ask.
Not sure which level fits? Find your fit asks four questions, and IOP vs PHP vs outpatient care compares them. A program will also assess you and recommend a level of care.
Questions about IOP in Phoenix
Which intensive outpatient programs (IOP) in Phoenix take Medicaid (AHCCCS)?
32 list Medicaid on their records: Arizona Rehab Campus, Community Medical Services, Cornerstone Healing Center, Crossroads, Haven Behavioral Hospital of Phoenix and 27 more. Call the program, then the member services number on your Medicaid card: if your card names a health plan, the program has to be in that plan's network.
What insurance do they take?
35 accept private insurance, 20 Medicare and 25 TRICARE. The plans named most on their own websites: Cigna (13), Aetna (12), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (12) and UnitedHealthcare (10). A program that doesn't name your plan may still take it: call the number on your insurance card and ask whether the program is in network for IOP, whether you need prior authorization, and what you'll pay.
How much does IOP cost in Phoenix?
Cima Find Care doesn't list prices: what you pay depends on your insurance, the program and how long you need care. Of these 37 programs, 34 take cash or self-pay, 10 have a sliding-scale fee set by income and 10 list state or federal funding for substance use treatment, which can pay for people without insurance. Before you start, ask the program to check your benefits and to put the daily or weekly price in writing.
How long does IOP last?
Usually several weeks, with fewer hours a week as you go, then a step down to outpatient care. How long depends on your progress and what your insurance approves.
What should I bring?
A photo ID, your insurance or Medicaid card, a list of your medicines and doses, and your doctors' names and numbers. The first visit is mostly an assessment and paperwork, so it can take longer than a regular session.
What if I need help right now?
In an emergency, call 911. In a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988, any time. SAMHSA's National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free, confidential and open all day, every day, and can refer you to treatment.
