Programs with the fullest public record come first. Levels of care and insurance are as listed on FindTreatment.gov or the program's own website. Filter them by insurance, language and telehealth.
What medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is
Medication for addiction treatment (MAT) uses FDA-approved medicines with counseling: buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone for opioid use disorder, and naltrexone, acamprosate or disulfiram for alcohol use disorder. It's the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder (heroin, fentanyl, pain pills), and it can go with any other level of care.
Buprenorphine (the medicine in Suboxone) is prescribed at an office visit and taken at home. Methadone for addiction is given only at a licensed opioid treatment program, usually daily at first. Naltrexone is a daily pill or a monthly shot (Vivitrol). Counseling goes with each.
Not sure which level fits? Find your fit asks four questions, and IOP vs PHP vs outpatient care compares them. A program will also assess you and recommend a level of care.
Questions about MAT in Denver
Which programs offering medication for addiction (MAT) in Denver take Medicaid (Health First Colorado)?
21 list Medicaid on their records: AspenRidge Recovery, Colorado Medication Assisted Recovery, Denver Health and Hosp Authority, Denver Health Community Detox, Guardian Recovery and 16 more. Call the program, then the member services number on your Medicaid card: if your card names a health plan, the program has to be in that plan's network.
What insurance do they take?
21 accept private insurance, 17 Medicare and 14 TRICARE. The plans named most on their own websites: Cigna (13), Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (11), Aetna (9) and UnitedHealthcare (9). A program that doesn't name your plan may still take it: call the number on your insurance card and ask whether the program is in network for MAT, whether you need prior authorization, and what you'll pay.
How much does MAT cost in Denver?
Cima Find Care doesn't list prices: what you pay depends on your insurance, the program and how long you need care. Of these 24 programs, 23 take cash or self-pay, 9 have a sliding-scale fee set by income, 9 list state or federal funding for substance use treatment, which can pay for people without insurance and 1 says it takes no payment at all. Before you start, ask the program to check your benefits and to put the daily or weekly price in writing.
How long does MAT last?
There's no set end. Many people take their medicine for months or years, and staying on it lowers the risk of relapse and overdose. Stopping is a decision to make with your prescriber, slowly, not on your own.
What should I bring?
A photo ID, your insurance or Medicaid card, a list of everything you take, and your pharmacy's name. Tell the prescriber what you've been using: it's safer, and it's confidential. Before a first dose of buprenorphine you usually need to be in some withdrawal, so ask when to stop using before the visit.
What if I need help right now?
In an emergency, call 911. In a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988, any time. SAMHSA's National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free, confidential and open all day, every day, and can refer you to treatment.
